When is the last time that you learned something new? I’m not talking like a fun fact from Wild Kratts, I mean like legit learned a new skill. Something that you didn’t previously know how to do or hadn’t ever tried?
Recently, a friend and I took up tennis.
There’s a tennis court in my backyard, so it seemed like a reasonable feat.
And to my surprise, it has been SO much fun. And given me so much more than just the proper technique on how to hold a tennis racquet.
There is something that happens inside of you, a mental shift of sorts, when you put yourself out there and learn a new skill.
- You are admitting that you don’t know everything. This dose of humility is healthy for everyone at any given stage.
- You are in a vulnerable position. To be teachable, and learn, means submission to someone else who knows better than you. This is a good reminder of when you’re parenting. To remember that you are teaching little humans who are submitting to you, and have most likely never walked this path so be gentle in your teachings.
- You feel accomplished. How many times do I get through my day and wonder if I even accomplished anything? It seems that every mess I cleaned up, there would be four more in its place within minutes. Getting out there and trying something new helps satisfy that desire to accomplish and achieve, and ultimately this increases your self confidence.
So if you are feeling stuck, bored or apathetic in your motherhood journey, I would encourage you to get out there and try something new. Find a new hobby. Invest in some lessons of sorts. Learn a new skill. My hunch is that you will end up receiving a lot more than what you expect!
